SUMMARY:Foundations of Inclusive Practice: A Glimpse of SRV
DESCRIPTION:Across India\, change leaders committed to better lives for people with developmental and psychosocial disability are talking about and learning about Social Role Valorization\, a powerful set of ideas about how to assist people to have full\, rich\, meaningful lives. SRV provides a high order framework for understanding the society in which we live\, and the place people with disabilities tend to hold within it. As well\, SRV thinking is accompanied by very practical implementation strategies to help people with disabilities have access to the good things of life.\nPlease join us as we introduce participants to the basics of Social Role Valorization. This overview event will present the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the\nimplications of those life experiences and are committed to the work of making life better are encouraged to attend.\nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. SUMMARY:Leadership-Level SRV Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides an introduction to Social Role Valorization (SRV)\, developed by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger\, one of the most influential thinkers in the field of human services worldwide. Wolfensberger’s work helped lay the foundation for many current human service trends\, including the development of community services\, integration\, self-determination and rights\, and person-centered planning. \nSRV is a systematic & universally applicable concept for structuring human services\, for direct service and for families. Its foundation is in the fields of psychology\, sociology & broad human experience. SRV describes a close relationship between the socially perceived value of the roles that people hold\, & whether people in those roles will be accorded opportunities & other ‘good things of life.’ Bad things tend to get done to people who are seen in devalued roles\, & good things tend to be afforded to people in positively valued roles. \nTopics to be explored include: the universality of social devaluation; the defining power of roles in people’s lives; strategies for pursuing socially valued roles for devalued people\, with an aim toward improving their life conditions; enhancement of people’s social images; & enhancement of people’s competencies. The workshop offers a critical SRV-based look at many contemporary human service practices. \n\n\n

Dr. Wolfensberger’s work helped lay the foundation for many current human service trends\, including integration\, safeguarding of rights\, and the deinstitutionalization movement. \nSRV is a systematic and universally applicable concept for structuring human services is anchored in the empiricism of psychology and sociology. SRV suggests a close relationship between the socially perceived value of the roles that people hold\, and whether people in those roles will be accorded opportunities and other good things of life. Bad things tend to get done to people who are seen in devalued roles\, and good things tend to be afforded to people in positively valued roles.
