SUMMARY:"Lest We Forget: The Existence of the Back Ward" An Online ISRVA Study Session
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the 1960s and the 1970s\, reformers and revolutionaries exposed the abuse of people with impairments of the body and the mind in state hospitals and state schools. Their work began with the publication of photos and the broadcast of videos\, but it did not end there. For fifty years\, they wrote about legally sanctioned human abuse in state institutions.  In many ways\, these reformers stood by\, with and for some of the most deeply marginalized people in western societies\, and made people visible as full\, worthy human beings to the rest of the world. Matthew Brennan came into a service role well after the reformation days of such impactful change agents as Wolf Wolfensberger\, Gunner Dybwad\, and Burton Blatt\, and yet their work impacted him greatly. He will present on the legacy of the institutions where people with disability were segregated en mass\, and the role of reformers in shaping his own perspectives. Matthew serves as the administrator of Family Lives\, a Massachusetts human service agency that works to implement of Social Role Valorization and will present the lessons that he has learned from reading the writings of these reformers and revolutionaries.

DESCRIPTION:Across India\, change leaders committed to better lives for people with developmental and psychosocial disability are talking about and learning about Social Role Valorization\, a powerful set of ideas about how to assist people to have full\, rich\, meaningful lives. SRV provides a high-order framework for understanding the society in which we live\, and the place people with disabilities tend to hold within in. As well\, SRV thinking is accompanied by very practical implementation strategies to help people with disabilities have access to the good things of life. \nPlease join us as we introduce participants to the basics of Social Role Valorization. This overview event will present the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the implications of those life experiences and are committed to the work of making life better are encouraged to attend. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes multi-media presentation\, small and large group reflection and discussion\, and resource materials. DESCRIPTION:Around 1800\, a movement arose in Europe that soon spread to America\, called “moral treatment”\, taught a service approach\, especially to those with mental disorders\, that stood in strong positive contrast to their then-prevailing very negative interpretation and treatment\, as if they were menaces or even sub-human. Moral treatment emphasized culturally normative environments\, high expectancies\, much active engagement in valued activities and routines of life\, the minimization of both physical restraints and of drugs\, and the importance of not “medicalizing” mental afflictions\, i.e\, not interpreting them as diseases. In many ways\, moral treatment was a forerunner of the normalization principle and Social Role Valorization (SRV) in our day. For a short while\, it had spectacular success in habilitating people\, but was eventually defeated by the materialistic paradigm of psychiatry that spread to other service domains as well. The presentation will explain moral treatment\, draw parallels with SRV\, and point out some lessons from this almost-unknown positive episode in the history of mental services. For helping someone get engaged more with the community? Like a bright red thread\, the idea of the “Culturally Valued Analogue” runs through all SRV theory\, providing such practical guidance on where to start and how to proceed with supporting someone with a disability to live a full life. \nIn supporting people with disability to live good lives\, there’s a lot to learn from what already exists in society. We can use this as an anchor point from which to gear our efforts. Intended for those with a basic understanding of Social Role Valorization\, this participatory workshop will help us develop the “thinking practice” of grounding ourselves in the ordinary before we begin to adapt and accommodate to help people be fully engaged.

DESCRIPTION:This Zoom presentation aims to introduce you to Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s newly published books: Model Coherency – The Key to Human Service Quality Vol 1\,2 & 3 and stimulate renewed interest in the study of model coherency and application. \nDr. Wolfensberger offers advanced insights into model\ncoherency\, with much new material on the fundamental\nimportance of assumptions\, the culturally valued analogue\,\nthe interconnection between model coherency and Social\nRole Valorization\, including PASSING and PASS\, the\nconstruct of need\, and the distinction between service\ncontent and service process.\nWhile this brief event cannot thoroughly explore these\nareas\, we hope it will encourage your further study of Dr.\nWolfersberger writings about them.\nPresentation topics will include the history of the model\ncoherency construct\, an overview of the four major\nelements of any human service model\, exploration of the\nsix major “tool subjects” of model coherency\, and the\nsuggested frameworks for service evaluation and service\ndesign.\nThe presentation will conclude with suggestions of potential\nways to more fully bring model coherency into ongoing efforts to teach and implement SRV.

SUMMARY:The Challenge of Being a Good Server When That is Not Made Easy Pickering\, ON Canada
DESCRIPTION:Direct service work is where “the rubber meets the road”; where the needs of people who\nreceive various types of human services are addressed. However\, good direct service\nwork can get lost in all the other things that surround and impinge on it\, such as laws and\nregulations\, union rules\, family concerns and demands\, etc. This workshop is intended to\nbe an opportunity for direct human service workers and those who supervise them to\nreflect on the challenge of trying to be a good server to people in need when\, for all sorts\nof reasons\, that is not easy to do. Family members\, volunteers\, direct service workers\, and\nthose in supervisory or administrative positions will all find this workshop beneficial.\nThe workshop will outline different kinds of direct service\, such as teaching\, nursing\,\nassisting with daily living\, whether at home or in another setting\, and employment\nassistance. It will explain how necessary and meritorious such service is\, and then\ndescribe some characteristics that distinguish good direct service from service that is\nharmful\, bad\, or simply indifferent.\nThe workshop will next present some of the most common obstacles to good service\, and\nexplain why it is so hard to provide good direct service. These obstacles include services\nbeing very formalized or rigid\, and societal values that do not support good service\, direct\nservice work\, servers\, and the people being served being viewed as of low value.\nFurthermore\, some kinds of direct service work are seen as the last option for people who\ncannot get any other kind of employment. Also\, services are often expected to do more\nthan they can realistically accomplish.\nThe last part of the workshop will review some possible actions for direct service workers\nand those who supervise them in light of all that has been covered. These actions have to\ndo with being or becoming a person of moral integrity within problem-ridden systems. A\nnumber of these actions will require the service worker to reflect on what kind of person\nthey want to be. While very helpful\, these are not actions that will fix all the problems that\nwill be reviewed.\nThe workshop consists of lectures\, with opportunities for questions and discussion during\nthe day.

DESCRIPTION:Valued Lives is being offered as a Residential Certificate Course to select thought leaders and emerging influencers of practice from across India. This body of knowledge was offered in India for the first time in 2016\, and the impact was immense. “SRV” theory is influencing the development of inclusive lives for people with disability in powerful ways. This is a residential certification course offered only to select leaders and emerging professionals\, family members\, and advocates. It is a theory course\, and will be followed by opportunities to implement\, build on\, and use the ideas in practice. It is our intention to continue to build on the community of practice currently using and sharing “SRV” across India. It should be noted that the materials are applicable to all devalued and marginalized persons in any society\, and our presenters and leaders have particular expertise working alongside people with developmental and psycho-social disability towards fuller\, richer\, better lives. This is an extensive time and resource commitment investing in leadership and future leaders. It is also a rigorous course which requires the full engagement and focus of each participant.
