SUMMARY:Wounding vs. Trauma: A Comparative Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Trauma informed care has been one of those frequently discussed idea sets that has been widely adopted by entire service systems as being important and worthy of investment. It has been seen as concordant with Social Role Valorization\, antagonistic to it\, and even equated with it. For this study session\, let’s learn together a bit about it\, and explore. \nTogether\, we’ll view a video giving an overview of Trauma Informed Care and have a chance for dialogue in which\, together\, we’ll draw parallels\, point out differences\, share our own experience\, draw out assumptions\, contrast the ideas in light of SRV principles\, and do some analysis together. \nTo accommodate members in different time zones and schedules\, this identical study session will be offered twice on September 14. DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides an introduction to Social Role Valorization (SRV) using the 10 core themes\, developed by Dr. W. Wolfensberger. Dr. Wolfensberger’s work helped lay the foundation for many current human service trends\, including integration\, safeguarding of rights\, and the deinstitutionalization movement. \nSRV is a systematic and universally applicable concept for structuring human services is anchored in the empiricism of psychology and sociology. SRV suggests a close relationship between the socially perceived value \nof the roles that people hold\, and whether people in those roles will be accorded opportunities and other good things of life. Bad things tend to get done to people who are seen in devalued roles\, and good things tend to be afforded to people in positively valued roles.  \nTopics to be explored will include the universality of social devaluation\, the defining power of roles in people’s lives\, strategies for pursuing socially valued roles\, or at least less devalued roles for devalued people with an aim toward improving their life conditions\, enhancing people’s social images\, and enhancing people’s competencies.

DESCRIPTION:This five-day workshop is for those who are interested in deepening their knowledge about the principles of Social Role Valorization. This workshop involves learning to use the PASSING assessment tool\, which looks at the realities of Social Role Valorization in practice. It emphasizes the impact of services on the lives of the people being served and provides an opportunity to craft a vision of a good service and the foundation from which to design relevant and effective support\, service\, advocacy\, and assess service quality. \nThe work of PASSING is done in teams\, visiting a residential and a “day” service\, meeting the people being served\, and conducting interviews with service administrators. The workshop involves extensive personal reflection and analysis\, group conciliation\, and thought-provoking discussion. SUMMARY:SRV and Additional Perspectives that are Central to Good Service
DESCRIPTION:As Social Role Valorization (SRV) teaching and writing emphasizes\,  people who want to implement SRV must draw on beliefs\, values\, and  ideologies that go beyond SRV–that are much deeper than SRV. One  body of thought that is a rich source of ideas that can provide motive  and guidance for implementing SRV is called “Personalism”. It was  very influential to Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger\, who formulated SRV. This  workshop will explore the possible intersection of Personalism and  SRV in several areas. In each area\, we will look at what can be drawn  from SRV but also what goes beyond (and outside) the scope of SRV. This workshop is designed for people who have knowledge of SRV  through a one-day or longer workshop on SRV. \nPresenter: Susan Thomas is the long-time Training Coordinator at the Training  Institute for Human Service Planning\, Leadership\, and Change Agentry at Syracuse University. SUMMARY:The Universals are in the Cards: How postcards of private\, religious\, and fraternal societies’ homes for orphans and the elderly demonstrate Wolfensberger’s universals
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Wolfensberger collected postcards as artifacts depicting various types of institutions\, human services and the imaging of societally esteemed people. They inform the viewer of trends in service provision\, and societal perceptions of people in need of assistance. The postcards also reveal certain aspects within the broader society\, and specifically within human services\, that prevail across time and space\, what Dr. Wolfensberger called universals.\nThis presentation focuses on the development of orphanages\, and homes for the aged as they replaced the almhouse for housing children and the elderly. Focusing on North America\, we examine postcards of private secular homes\, homes founded by religious organizations\, and those created by fraternal organizations. The postcards illustrate the development of several types of architectural approaches to housing: the multiple cottage scheme\, mixed designs\, and the independent village model.\nAcross these examples we will uncover the presence of several universals identified by Dr. Wolfensberger. As a result we will find faint reminders of the almhouse continuing within the replacement institutions.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Social Role Valorization
DESCRIPTION:The Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued social roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes pre-recorded as well as live presentations\, small and large group live reflection and discussion\, online forums and resource materials. SUMMARY:Introduction to PASSING
DESCRIPTION:This five-day workshop is for those who are interested in deepening their knowledge about the principles of Social Role Valorization. This workshop involves learning to use the PASSING assessment tool\, which looks at the realities of Social Role Valorization in practice. It emphasizes the impact of services on the lives of the people being served and provides an opportunity to craft a vision of a good service and the foundation from which to design relevant and effective support\, service\, advocacy\, and assess service quality. \nThe work of PASSING is done in teams\, visiting a residential and a “day” service\, meeting the people being served\, and conducting interviews with service administrators. The workshop involves extensive personal reflection and analysis\, group conciliation\, and thought-provoking discussion. The week’s work is conducted under the guidance of an experienced team leader. \nPrior attendance at a three- or four-day Introduction to a full Social Role Valorization theory course\, either online or in-person\, is required to register for this event. \nThis workshop includes five days and four long nights.  Participants can check into the hotel on the afternoon of Sunday\, October 24\, 2027. \nRegistration and more information: Coming Soon!
