DESCRIPTION:August 24\, 28\, 31\, September 7\, 11\, 14\, 18\, 21\, 25 from 10-2pm \nParticipants MUST ATTEND ALL SESSIONS \nTHIS WORKSHOP PROVIDES an introduction to Social Role Valorization\n(SRV)\, developed by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger. His work helped lay the\nfoundation for many current human service trends\, including the\ndevelopment of community services\, integration\, self-determination and\nrights\, and person-centered planning.\nSRV is a systematic\, universally applicable framework for structuring human\nservices\, applicable to administration\, board members\, direct service workers\nand families. SRV describes a close relationship between the perceived value of\nthe roles that people hold\, and whether people in those roles will be accorded\nopportunities and other ‘good things of life.’ Bad things tend to get done to\npeople who are seen in devalued roles\, and good things tend to be afforded to\npeople in positively valued roles.\nThe workshop offers a critical SRV-based look at many contemporary human\nservice practices. Participants will benefit from lectures\, question and answer\nperiods\, and discussion. Written assignments will be accomplished between\nsessions and will form the basis for reflection and conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Developed by Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger\, SRV is an elaboration of his earlier conceptualization of\nnormalization. Today\, SRV represents one of the few well organized theories that positively addresses the plight of people who are devalued by society. It was also essential in developing a framework for the development of the community living movement. SRV contains many positive principles and broad strategies to assist in overcoming devaluation and attaining the good things in life. While it is not a detailed “how to” workshop\, participants\nwill leave with a dynamic conceptual framework in problem solving and implementation through practical action in their work and personal lives.\nSocial Role Valorization (SRV) is one of the best ways to understand and address issues of marginalization\, oppression and exclusion of people who are devalued in our communities. DESCRIPTION:In the 1960s and the 1970s\, reformers and revolutionaries exposed the abuse of people with impairments of the body and the mind in state hospitals and state schools. Their work began with the publication of photos and the broadcast of videos\, but it did not end there. For fifty years\, they wrote about legally sanctioned human abuse in state institutions.  In many ways\, these reformers stood by\, with and for some of the most deeply marginalized people in western societies\, and made people visible as full\, worthy human beings to the rest of the world. Matthew Brennan came into a service role well after the reformation days of such impactful change agents as Wolf Wolfensberger\, Gunner Dybwad\, and Burton Blatt\, and yet their work impacted him greatly. He will present on the legacy of the institutions where people with disability were segregated en mass\, and the role of reformers in shaping his own perspectives. Matthew serves as the administrator of Family Lives\, a Massachusetts human service agency that works to implement of Social Role Valorization and will present the lessons that he has learned from reading the writings of these reformers and revolutionaries.
