SUMMARY:THE HISTORY OF HUMAN SERVICES: TRACING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOME MAJOR CONTEMPORARY SERVICE PATTERNS\, & SOME UNIVERSAL LESSONS WHICH CAN BE LEARNED FROM THIS HISTORY\, In-Person Ontario CA
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event \nDESCRIPTION: Using a great many images\, this two-part presentation documents the evolution of major human service concepts and practices\, from ancient\, informal\, voluntary\, unpaid personal helping forms to the largely commercialized patterns that we see today. Especially\, illustrations of human service settings will be used to show what the service patterns and assumptions were in a given era\, and how they changed over time. \n  \nDay One of the presentation will sketch important early antecedents of current human service patterns\, and will show that the history of human services of all types is inextricably intertwined with the history of care for the poor\, and of residential services. The evolution of human services into the late Medieval period will be traced\, and the impact of the collapse of medieval services due to political\, economic\, cultural\, and other changes in the 16th and 17th centuries will be explained\, leading to much segregation and brutalization of the people served. \nDay Two of the presentation will explain how services became alienated from their valued cultural roots and analogues\, and how service recipients of all kinds began to be interpreted as menaces and treated accordingly. As well\, the impact of the materialistic worldview that arose in the 18th century will be presented. At the end of Day Two\, many lessons from this historical review will be drawn.

DESCRIPTION:This five day workshop is for those who are interested in deepening their knowledge about the principles of Social Role Valorization. The workshop involves learning to use the PASSING assessment tool\, which looks at the realities of Social Role Valorization in practice. It emphasizes the impact of services on the lives of the people being served\, and provides an opportunity to craft a vision of a good service and the foundation from which to design relevant and effective support\, service and advocacy\, and assess service quality. The work of PASSING is done in teams\, visiting a residential and a “day” service\, meeting the people being served\, and conducting interviews with service administrators. The workshop involves extensive personal reflection and analysis\, group conciliation and thought provoking discussion. The week’s work is conducted under the guidance of an experienced team leader.* Prior attendance at a 3 or 4 day Introduction to Social Role Valorization workshop is required to register for this event.

DESCRIPTION:Festschrift update \n2 March\, 2023 \nFestschrift in honour of Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger (1934-2011): \nThe Influence of the Person and his Ideas Today.  \nFestschrift: “a volume of articles\, essays\, etc.\, contributed by many authors in honor of a colleague\, usually published on the occasion of retirement\, an important anniversary\, or the like.”  Our Festschrift will include a gathering/symposium and book. \nA group of us have been quietly organising a festschrift to mark the 10th year since Dr. Wolfensberger’s death in 2011. The event was postponed because of COVID. \nThe festschrift has two principal components. \n\nthe publication of a book of review essays on some of the major conceptual work that Dr. Wolfensberger was engaged in.\na small-scale celebratory gathering at the Wolfensberger Archives in Omaha\, Nebraska where contributing authors would present some of their findings.\n\nThe festschrift will be held May 12th to 14th\, 2023 at the UNMC in Omaha NE. \nMore information: Festschrift – announcement text January 2023 \nRegistration: https://go.unmc.edu/wolf. \nRaymond Lemay \nraylemay@rogers.com
