His work helped lay the foundation for many current human service trends\, including the development of community services\, integration\, self-determination and rights\, and person-centered planning.\nSRV is a systematic\, universally applicable framework for structuring human services\, applicable to administration\, board members\, direct service workers\nand families. SRV describes a close relationship between the perceived value of the roles that people hold\, and whether people in those roles will be accorded\nopportunities and other ‘good things of life.’ Bad things tend to get done to people who are seen in devalued roles\, and good things tend to be afforded to people in positively valued roles.\nThe workshop offers a critical SRV-based look at many contemporary human service practices. DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we’ll explore the unpleasant and paradoxical reality that patients in medical settings are exposed to dangers which can jeopardize their health and safety. This is a reality for all people\, but it is especially ominous for people who are members of a socially disadvantaged class\, including those who are elderly and/or impaired. Attendees will receive practical guidelines and measures for protecting people in medical settings\, gleaned from thirty years experience with the Medical Safeguards Project of Shriver Clinical Services Corporation in Massachusetts. \nThis webinar will be open captioned and ASL interpretation will be provided. Please email info@wpdhac.org if you require any additional accommodations. \nAbout the Presenters\nCathy Ludlum’s personal and professional activities focus on the inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of community life. As a person with a disability and an employer of personal assistants since 1988\, Cathy brings an extensive background in the recruitment\, hiring\, and management of support staff. She has written several books\, including a manual on how to hire personal assistants. Most recently\, as the Employer Liaison for the Connecticut Association of Personal Assistants (CTAPA)\, Cathy has been assisting employers by providing information about Medicaid waiver programs\, management tips\, and creative brainstorming. Cathy Ludlum is an associate of the SRV Implementation Project\, working on the issue of the vulnerability of people with impairments in medical settings.She teaches workshops with Jo Massarelli on medical safeguarding and on demystifying assisted hydration and nutrition\, or what it is like to have a g-tube. She has lived independently (with support) since 1992. \nJo Massarelli is Director of the SRV Implementation Project based in Massachusetts (USA). She divides her time between teaching Social Role Valorization and related topics and working to effect positive change for elders\, people with impairments\, and the poor. She has taught at workshops and lectured at conferences across the United States\, Canada\, Japan\, Ireland\, Australia and New Zealand to a variety of human service workers serving a wide range of people. Ms. Massarelli has evaluated dozens of human service programs for children\, adults and elders\, including in-home services\, residential\, day and work programs\, schools\, hospice\, prisons\, and homeless shelters. Jo Massarelli is a consultant to Family Lives\, a home nursing service for children with significant medical needs\, and the Medical Safeguards Project\, an effort of physicians and nurses who seek to protect the lives of impaired people in medical settings. She has a particular interest in advocacy in hospitals. She and her colleagues teach workshops on defending vulnerable people in hospitals and on medical decision-making. Jo Massarelli has been a close associate of the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger and his Training Institute in Syracuse\, New York since 1983. She and her husband Marc Tumeinski are members of a community responding to the needs of homeless people in downtown Worcester\, Massachusetts\, by providing hospitality in their homes.

SUMMARY:Public Hostage\, Public Ransom: Ending Institutional America An Online Discussion with Dr. William Bronston
DESCRIPTION:Dr. William Bronston\, author ofPublic Hostage Public Ransom: Ending Institutional America\nwill share his story of working at Willowbrook State School in Staten Island\, NY\, in the 1970’s\, where6000 persons with disabilities were incarcerated under abusive conditions. He catalyzed a Federal Class Action Lawsuit against the state of New York to close the death making institution.\nWillowbrook and the many other institutions across the country that warehoused people with disabilities were Medicaid funded. Dr. Bronston posits that many people with disabilities are still “public hostages”\, consigned again to profit driven\, segregated\, and congregated institutional lives\, funded by Medicaid’s billions\, America’s “public ransom”. He draws a clear line to indict State bureaucracies and provides a strategic rationale to end Title 19 of   Security Act\, the Medicaid system\, to heal the deep societal wound that the segregated nursing home and assisted living industry enact on people with disabilities and their families. He sees universal expanded and improved Medicare for all\, single payer health care\, as the clear solution and ultimate antidote to this highly segregated system that exists now\, and we tolerate. The shocking horrors of Willowbrook State School were exposed and will never be forgotten. Doctor Bronston takes on all of America’s institutions that have not learned the lesson of the tragedy of Willowbrook. DESCRIPTION:Children are among society’s most vulnerable people. Abuse\, poor access to the good things of life\, social stigma and death are just a few of the common life experiences facing children living below the poverty line or who are vulnerable for other reasons. Many service practices and structures have been developed to address the difficult circumstances facing young people\, yet society’s response to vulnerable children is often shaped by its history and the mindsets that have developed overtime. Seldom do we take time to pause and reflect on where those mindsets come from and what approaches have been used. \n  \nThis two hour presentation and discussion will selectively describe the age old problems of abandonment and infanticide; oblation and orphanages in the Middle -Ages; and the birth of modern child welfare services in the 1850s that foreshadows the principle of normalization. \nRaymond Lemay is a senior SRV teacher who has spent much of his career in child welfare and has an abiding interest in the history of services to children and youth\, and its ongoing relevance to current human service trends. \nPlease join ISRVA for this fascinating history of services to vulnerable children and youth\, rooted in western countries but with lessons for all.

SUMMARY:The Problem with the Readiness Model
DESCRIPTION:Change and growth\, learning new things\, acquiring skills and developing competencies – they are essential to living a full life for all humankind.  Helping vulnerable people to do so is the inherent work of personal human service.  All too often\, incoherent human service models\, the impacts of social devaluation and even our own mindsets and low expectancies about people result in all sorts of ineffective teaching and missed opportunities for capacity building. These dynamics have resulted in a decades long focus on getting people “ready”- “ready” for independence\, “ready” for a real job\, “ready for relationship. What happens when someone will never meet the standard of “ready”?  And what does it even mean to be “ready”? Certainly\, there is often a sequence of development; and growth and change are also flexible and creative and dynamic. \nHow might people progress more meaningfully through a focus on preparedness rather than readiness\, interdependence rather than independence and how can we use powerful tools like the dynamics of role circularity\, the culturally valued analogue\, imitation and modeling\, a developmental approach and respectful and healthy accommodations to assist people to emerge towards a life of full of capacity and contribution. Join the Keystone Institute as we welcome Hope Dittmeier\, Milton Tyree and Merry- Reid Sheffer for learning\, exploration and discussion on these issues that speak to the hands\, head and heart of our work in human service. \nHope Leet Dittmeier has devoted the last 40 years in a variety of roles\, personally and professionally\, investigating the question\, “What would it take for people to enjoy ordinary lives in lieu of life in segregation?” As a family member\, Hope has walked alongside her sister-in-law who lived with intellectual disability\, supporting her to have a career\, own a home\, become an integral part of her church community\, fulfill the role of “doting aunt”\, and enjoy a rich personal social network. In professional roles\, she has focused on designing robust supports unique to each individual person. She has championed a variety of causes\, including compassionate responses to people whose behavior challenges others\, increased availability of affordable\, accessible housing\, and Employment First initiatives. Hope’s life and work has been informed on a consistent basis by Social Role Valorization. In addition to doing the work\, Hope has also developed and provided ‘Endeavor for Excellence’ training regarding the implementation of SRV theory in practice. Hope is currently Executive Director at Mattingly Edge where she has been instrumental in transforming a large\, legacy day program that utilized a medical model into a service that provides only individualized supports\, designed to help people enjoy the same good things in life that most people take for granted. Hope holds a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counselling from the University of Kentucky. \nMilton Tyree lives in Louisville\, Kentucky and has 40 years’ experience in the design\, development\, and provision of supports and services centered on people with disabilities having access to valued aspects of everyday life. A particular area of interest has been the ongoing struggle around people with disabilities having good employment. Milt’s efforts have been strongly influenced by the work of the late Dr. Marc Gold\, and he is an associate with Marc Gold & Associates (MG&A). Additionally\, the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s Social Role Valorization (SRV) theory has been foundational in Milt’s understanding of the importance of good employment for people with disabilities\, the reasons this can be difficult\, and considerations for addressing the challenges. \nMerry-Reid joins us from Kentucky where she is the Director of Employment Services with Edge Employment whose theory of practice is Social Role Valorization. Merry-Reid holds certifications for Customized Employment in Systematic Instruction and Discovery and Job Development through Marc Gold and Associates. She serves as the chair of the Employer Education and Engagement Committee on the Governor’s Employment First Council\, where she helps to spread awareness about the many disabled people living with disabilities who fill (or would like to fill) the valued role of employee and the many benefits that brings to all. Merry-Reid holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville and a Master’s Degree in Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School and she is currently working on a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Louisville. Her previous work in human services includes serving people who are homeless\, coordinating children’s literacy programs\, and prison abolition advocacy.

SUMMARY:Opportunity for Research and Study:The Wolfensberger Archives at the University of Nebraska Medical Center McGoogan Health Sciences Library
DESCRIPTION:DOCTOR WOLF WOLFENSBERGER\, human services\nthinker\, leader\, reformer\, and inventor of Social Role\nValorization (SRV)\, left a very extensive archive of\nmaterials upon his death in February 2011. These archives are\nheld at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha\,\nNebraska\, where Dr. Wolfensberger held one of his first\npositions in the 1960s-early ’70s. His time in Omaha was also\none of his most active in designing and implementing\nservices that were not institutional in nature—some of the\nfirst in the country—and based on the then-new principle of\nnormalization\, the forerunner of SRV.\nThis presentation will explain the history and contents of the\narchives\, which include—among other things—papers\, audiovisual\nteaching materials\, recordings of presentations\, and\nbooks. It will also explain how the archives are organized and\nhow to access them—both in person and electronically—as\nwell as some of the hopes and plans to preserve the archived\nmaterials and make them more widely available.\nThe presentation will be about 50 minutes to an hour in\nlength\, followed by 30 to 40 minutes for questions and discussion.\nThe presentation will be conducted by Susan Thomas of\nthe Training Institute at Syracuse University that Dr. Wolfensberger\nfounded in 1973 and directed for 38 years\, and Darby\nKurtz of the McGoogan Library at the University of Nebraska\nMedical Center\, who is the archivist with responsibility for\nthe Wolfensberger materials there.
