DESCRIPTION:  \nThe contemporary world is abuzz with talk about so-called “artificial intelligence” (AI)\, and claims for what it can and will be able to do. Anything that sweeps over the world like this has implications to devalued people and services to them\, and those who are concerned about and want to alleviate the plight of devalued parties should pay attention to such things. In this presentation\, the background and context of so-called “AI” will be examined\, as well as a number of ways that it connects to and has implications for Social Role Valorization and the pursuit of valued roles for devalued people. The presentation will be followed by time for questions\, comments\, and discussion. SUMMARY:The Road Most Traveled: Using the Culturally Valued Analogue as Your Guide
DESCRIPTION:Mapping out a vision of a big\, full\, inclusive life for vulnerable people can be full of road bumps. Sometimes we don’t know people very well\, sometimes people are uncertain themselves about their identity\, gifts\, talents and what their future could hold; and sometimes we are so lost in “human service land” that we lose sight of the typical pathways of life and all they have to offer people.  But when we are stuck developing roles\, designing services or even planning a house warming party for someone\, using the culturally valued analogue can provide us some tried and true guidance to get started\, by reminding us to consider “What happens for people with a valued status?” \nJoin us to learn more about using the CVA to keep us moving in the right direction as we walk with vulnerable people.

This workshop is designed for those who have some training in Social Role Valorization\, and those who have also done deep SRV study. SRV theory\, derived from the principle of normalization\, was first defined by Wolf Wolfensberger in 1983. SUMMARY:Introductory Passing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: PASSING workshops are designed to enable participants with previous Social Role Valorization\n(SRV) training to gain a deeper understanding of devaluation and of how the promotion of valued social roles may\nenable people who are devalued to experience “the good thing of life”. The workshop is directed at anyone who is\ninterested in bringing about change in the lives of devalued people\, including families\, human service workers and\nmanagers\, service users\, students\, advocates\, board members\, and others. Prerequisite: Full attendance at a multiday\nSRV workshop (typically a 3- or 4-day format). Details required upon registration.\nWorkshop format: There are plenary sessions at the beginning and end of the workshop-at the beginning to provide\nan overview of PASSING and at the very end\, to share and reflect upon what we have all learned. In between\, participants\nare organized into teams of about six people plus a Team Leader. The teams visit two different human service\nprograms (e.g.\, a group residence\, school program\, adult day support program\, etc.). Following each visit\, the team\nuses the PASSING manual to consider how the program contributes (or impedes) the development of valued social\nroles. This analysis will last well into the evening hours of each day.\nImportant note: PASSING workshops require an intense commitment of time and energy. Participants should arrive\nwell rested and plan to forego all outside involvement during the workshop. Participants must be fully present and\nparticipate throughout the entire workshop\, including all evening sessions. Because of this we advise all participants\nto stay at the workshop location – Seneca College Residence and Conference Center.

If so\, this is a chance for ISRVA members to hear Marc Tumeinski’s compelling keynote address\, specifically offered to us.  As is typical\, we’ll listen to Marc’s presentation\, then have the chance for SRV focused conversation and dialogue. \n  \nMultiple forms of restraint (physical\, mechanical\, chemical) are commonly\, even increasingly\, accepted and used as valid human service approaches in a wide variety of disparate service fields\, yet with very little comprehensive analysis of these dangerous practices. In this presentation\, Marc Tumeinski draws upon multiple tools authored by Wolf Wolfensberger\, including Social Role Valorization and Model Coherency\, to examine the nature and impact of human service restraint practices\, taking into account the heightened vulnerability of devalued people in services. \nAbout the Presenter: Marc Tumeinski\, PhD\, is a trainer with the SRV Implementation Project. As a service worker\, he has supported children and adults with physical and/or intellectual impairments\, as well as mental disorder\, at home\, school and work. Social Role Valorization\, and related work by Wolfensberger\, has been the guiding framework for his service-related efforts since his first involvement in human services. He has given workshops and spoken on issues of violence in services\, as well as the use of restrictive practices such as restraint\, at conferences in the US\, Canada\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and the Netherlands. Marc has an article on the topic of restraint use published in the February 2005 issue of Mental Retardation\, as well as two more recent articles published in 2019 and 2023. In this presentation\, Marc Tumeinski draws upon multiple tools authored by Wolf Wolfensberger\, including Social Role Valorization and Model Coherency\, to examine the nature and impact of human service restraint practices\, taking into account the heightened vulnerability of devalued people in services. \n  \n  \nAbout the Presenter: Marc Tumeinski\, PhD\, is a trainer with the SRV Implementation Project. As a service worker\, he has supported children and adults with physical and/or intellectual impairments\, as well as mental disorder\, at home\, school and work. Social Role Valorization\, and related work by Wolfensberger\, has been the guiding framework for his service-related efforts since his first involvement in human services. He has given workshops and spoken on issues of violence in services\, as well as the use of restrictive practices such as restraint\, at conferences in the US\, Canada\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and the Netherlands. Marc has an article on the topic of restraint use published in the February 2005 issue of Mental Retardation\, as well as two more recent articles published in 2019 and 2023. SUMMARY:Introduction to Passing Workshop - Lancaster Pennsylvania\, US
DESCRIPTION:This five-day workshop is for those who are interested\nin deepening their knowledge about the principles of\nSocial Role Valorization. This workshop involves\nlearning to use the PASSING assessment tool\, which\nlooks at the realities of Social Role Valorization in\npractice. It emphasizes the impact of services on the lives\nof the people being served\, and provides an opportunity\nto craft a vision of a good service and the foundation\nfrom which to design relevant and effective support\,\nservice\, advocacy\, and assess service quality. The work of\nPASSING is done in teams\, visiting a residential and a\n“day” service\, meeting the people being served\, and\nconducting interviews with service administrators. The\nworkshop involves extensive personal reflection and\nanalysis\, group conciliation\, and thought-provoking\ndiscussion. The week’s work is conducted under the\nguidance of an experienced team leader.\nPrior attendance to a full SRV theory course\, either\nonline or in-person\, is required to register for this event.\nThis workshop includes long days and late nights.
