Social Role Valorization theory offers a robust way to look at the power of work roles\, and to describe ways that supported employment might be best structured and understood. ISRVA is pleased to offer a study group led by Milton Tyree and Leela Raj to discuss the ways that SRV ideas can enrich the potency of employment efforts. \nMilt Tyree\, from Kentucky\, United States\, has deep professional and personal experience over decades of helping people with disabilities have strong work roles\, using SRV as a foundation. Leela Raj\, from Mumbai\, India\, works in collaboration with Milton\, heading up a national training project in India on supported and customized employment. SUMMARY:Addressing Social Devaluation in the Lives of Elderly and/or Disabled People: An SRV Perspective (Three Part Series via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Three sessions\, each two and half hours in length\, offered on Zoom \nWednesday\, January 6\, 2021  \nFriday\, January 8\, 2021 \nMonday\, January 11\, 2021 \nAll at 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm \nCovid-19 impacts different groups of people in very different ways. For some it has been\, for the most part\, an inconvenience. For others\, it has been nothing short of catastrophic. No group has been harder hit than those living in Long Term Care facilities\, where thousands have became ill and many have died sad and lonely deaths.  Other groups of people have also suffered greatly\, for example\, those who are old\, poor\, homeless\, new immigrants\, or have a disability. Not surprisingly\, those who were members of marginalized and devalued groups before Covid-19 are the ones who\, by and large\, have been hardest hit. Being devalued invariably puts people at greater risk of all kinds of bad things happening to them. The greater the devaluation\, the greater the risk. This phenomenon is not specific to Covid -19. Given that this is so\, what can be done that will make a positive difference to the lives of those who are devalued?

DESCRIPTION:Join a deeply passionate and committed change agent\, master global SRV expert\, and strong parent advocate as we explore the idea of trajectory and vision. Decision that are made by families early in the lives of their sons and daughters with disability often set the stage for the future. In this two hour workshop\, we’ll draw from Darcy’s deep experience and that of the families who join to discover and build on positive and possible inclusive futures for their children of any age. \nFamilies\, people with disabilities\, and human service workers have learned that an essential tool in bringing about a full\, meaningful\, included life is having a well-defined and articulated vision to focus\, guide\, and inspire action in the face of attitudinal obstacles and other set-backs. This workshop will help participants to clearly conceptualize their vision and encourage everyone to “keep their eyes on the prize” and not acquiesce to prevailing standards of what is “realistic.” The personal experiences of individuals and families will be shared; barriers identified\, and successful strategies for overcoming them will be brainstormed.

DESCRIPTION:This intensive multi-media distance course has been developed as a pilot alternative to the 28 hour classroom course typically hosted by the Keystone Institute. During this multi-day course held over 8 days\, participants will join in live plenary sessions at fixed times\, in-forum dialogue\, live small group reflective sessions\, and flexibly-timed assignments hosted within a course management platform. Participants will participate in 20 hours of live\, scheduled sessions\, and will be expected to complete 12.5 hours of coursework at their own convenience during certain time windows. Participants will learn about ways to help people have better lives by helping them achieve positive valued social roles. Practical strategies to make this a reality for the people you support are discussed. \nThis workshop takes place in two parts over two separate days via Zoom. It is necessary to attend both parts to receive credit for this workshop. \nDates: September 10 and 14.

The global pandemic is causing us to interact differently\, and Keystone Institute is adapting by providing our courses and events online\, using the best platform we can find. This event is a pilot\, and we need your help by attending it and providing us with feedback and suggestions. \nPlease join us as we introduce participants to the basics of Social Role Valorization. This overview event will present the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the implications of those life experiences\, and are committed to the work of making life better are encouraged to attend. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes multi-media presentation\, small and large group reflection and discussion\, and resource materials. All sorts of societal forces as well as practical considerations often mean that we are continuously compromising\, trading off\, and delaying improvements.  How can a service work to understand the progress is it making in implementing SRV\, and gain ideas about how to move forward?  This workshop will provide a bird’s eye view of several methods (from informal to formal) which can be used to evaluate aspects of service quality based on SRV criteria. In this short workshop\, we will focus on understanding the evaluation methods we have used\, and putting our heads together for ways to increase the competency of evaluators and the amount of SRV-based evaluation in India. This workshop will focus on one such concept\, known as the “Conservatism Corollary”\, helps us understand the need to prevent\, reduce\, and compensate for vulnerability. A big influencer in whether an option will deliver real benefits to a person depends on if it is powerful enough to compensate. In this workshop\, we’ll talk about how we might “bend over backwards” and see the greatest likelihood of positive change\, and will also help us as we struggle to weigh out the benefits and drawbacks of different approaches. \nPre-Requisite: At least 1/2 day introductory workshop in Social Role Valorization is required \n
