DESCRIPTION:March 22\, 23\, 24\, 29\, 30\, 31 (time frames listed below) \nThe Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued social roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes pre-recorded as well as live presentations\, small and large group live reflection and discussion\, online forums and resource materials. We’re all hard-wired to contribute – seeing purpose in our efforts and doing things for others. All too often people with disabilities are denied the powerful and innate joy of contributing to others\, finding themselves continually on the receiving end of assistance. In authentically supporting people to a more meaningful life\, we have an obligation to help people develop relevant skills and abilities that will serve as a pathway to valued social roles and access to the good things of life. Knowing what to do and having ways to contribute is what makes valued social roles authentic. This three part series will focus on why developing competencies is so important\, strategies for developing our own teaching competencies\, and an opportunity to put the learning into practice. \nJoin the Keystone Institute as we welcome Milton Tyree to lead us through this learning series. Milton Tyree has 40 years of experience in the design\, development and provision of supports and services centered on people with disabilities having access to valued aspects of everyday life. A particular area of interest has been the ongoing struggle around people with disabilities having good employment. His work for the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute focuses on supported employment leadership development. Milt also consults with congregational members and clergy about benefits of inclusive faith communities.

SUMMARY:The Comforts of Home: Exploring Valued Roles as a Source of Peace and Place During Calm and Crisis (Held via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, home is a springboard for going out into the world with our best foot forward. It is a place of rest\, refreshment\, identity and meaningful relationships. In these most recent times of pandemic and crisis\, home as an extension and expression of who we are\, as a place of solace\, comfort and safety\, as a place to explore new things; becomes more important\, and even critical for our well- being. \nWe know there are many barriers to this experience of true home for people living in formal human service settings. And\, because so much of our work revolves around supporting people at home\, we have a high obligation and vast opportunities to offer people home in its truest form. While spending increased amounts of time at home and adhering to necessary physical and social distancing procedures have been difficult\, most notably for people already experiencing lots of isolation and segregation\, we can use this time to focus on what authentic home has to offer the people we serve\, and how valued roles in and around home can serve as a source of comfort\, peace and place. \nJoin the Keystone Institute as we explore some of the obstacles to creating home in a formal service setting and how changes in home life have impacted people during the pandemic. We will also offer some practical tools and strategies for supporting people to have access to the good things that home and valued roles in and around home\, have to offer.

DESCRIPTION:Three sessions\, each two and half hours in length\, offered on Zoom \nWednesday\, January 6\, 2021  \nFriday\, January 8\, 2021 \nMonday\, January 11\, 2021 \nAll at 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm \nCovid-19 impacts different groups of people in very different ways. For some it has been\, for the most part\, an inconvenience. For others\, it has been nothing short of catastrophic. No group has been harder hit than those living in Long Term Care facilities\, where thousands have became ill and many have died sad and lonely deaths.  Other groups of people have also suffered greatly\, for example\, those who are old\, poor\, homeless\, new immigrants\, or have a disability. Not surprisingly\, those who were members of marginalized and devalued groups before Covid-19 are the ones who\, by and large\, have been hardest hit. Being devalued invariably puts people at greater risk of all kinds of bad things happening to them. The greater the devaluation\, the greater the risk. This phenomenon is not specific to Covid -19. Given that this is so\, what can be done that will make a positive difference to the lives of those who are devalued?

The global pandemic is causing us to interact differently\, and Keystone Institute is adapting by providing our courses and events on-line\, using the best platform we can find. This event is a pilot\, and we need your help by attending it and providing us with feedback and suggestions. \nPlease join us as we introduce participants to the basics of Social Role Valorization. This overview event will present the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the implications of those life experiences\, and are committed to the work of making life better are encouraged to attend. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes multi-media presentation\, small and large group reflection and discussion\, and resource materials. Participants should be prepared for significant presentations as well.

SUMMARY:Now is the Time for Vision: A Workshop with Darcy Elks Zoom Conference Platform
DESCRIPTION:Join a deeply passionate and committed change agent\, master global SRV expert\, and strong parent advocate as we explore the idea of trajectory and vision. Decision that are made by families early in the lives of their sons and daughters with disability often set the stage for the future. In this two hour workshop\, we’ll draw from Darcy’s deep experience and that of the families who join to discover and build on positive and possible inclusive futures for their children of any age. \nFamilies\, people with disabilities\, and human service workers have learned that an essential tool in bringing about a full\, meaningful\, included life is having a well-defined and articulated vision to focus\, guide\, and inspire action in the face of attitudinal obstacles and other set-backs. This workshop will help participants to clearly conceptualize their vision and encourage everyone to “keep their eyes on the prize” and not acquiesce to prevailing standards of what is “realistic.” The personal experiences of individuals and families will be shared; barriers identified\, and successful strategies for overcoming them will be brainstormed.
