SUMMARY:SRV Based Evaluation and Change: The Unity Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:This session is open to ISRVA Members\, and a registration flyer will be sent directly to members by January2. Membership is inexpensive and can be gained here.  For information\, contact eneuville@khs.org \nThe major evaluation instruments for SRV-based evaluation\, PASS and PASSING\, have often been taught and used for the purpose of teaching SRV in a thorough and compelling way to those who participate on teams. In fact\, PASSING workshops have been used as a practicum experience beyond the multi-day theory course much more often than as an actual evaluation tool. Susan Thomas will detail the profound and fundamental change made within one organization as a result of two SRV-based evaluations. Much is to be learned from both the evaluation conducted and from observing the change over time. As always\, time will be given for presentation\, followed by group discussion. \nSusan Thomas directs the Training Institute for Human Service Planning\, Leadership and Change Agentry\, and also serves as the Training Coordinator.  She has been an associate of the Training Institute for many years and holds degrees in psychology and special education. She is author of numerous articles on Normalization and Social Role Valorization and is co-author\, with Professor Wolfensberger\, of PASSING and other publications. Ms Thomas has also worked for many years in voluntary\, informal service to people with disabilities\, and poor and homeless people. She has presented workshops with Professor Wolfensberger in many countries. She is a regular columnist for the SRV Journal and writes about many issues related to Social Role Valorization.

Nobody knows this better than Cathy Ludlum! She will offer guidance from the perspective of a person who manages her own practical care.   Cathy explores the practical challenges of those who utilize medical technology as a baseline in everyday life\, and she has advice on what is to be done to help ensure good outcomes. For ourselves it is “we are doing fine with the way things are\, thank you.” Human beings cope with change by finding refuge in habitual living. The fact of the matter is that most of our lives are spent in a routinized fashion going from one thing to the next without giving it much thought\, as if things are always the same. We often seem to live in denial\, and automaticity characterizes our lives. Even complex activities such as driving a car are mostly done in almost unconscious fashion – we don’t really notice a lot of the change that goes on around us – we tend to go with the flow of new technology\, for instance. But then there are the dramatic moments when the past seems to break off at the present\, leading to a very different path to the future. Big sudden change – a catastrophe – the loss of a job\, an earthquake\, or a pandemic make huge demands on coping skills. \nSRV is also about change – directed change. It is about being change agents and about better futures. It is about capitalizing on unrelenting change for the better. \nLet’s put two and two together and see what we come up with in this study session incorporating change theory\, mindset change\, and consciousness-raising.

SUMMARY:Good Employment for People with Disabilities: How to Make it Happen A Four Part Series on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This is a four-part workshop with each session building\non the previous. Participants must attend all sessions.\nThe workshop explores several topics related to\nemployment for people with intellectual disabilities.\nRecognizing that meaningful work is one of the good\nthings of life\, the workshop begins with an examination\nof historical strategies and ideas about work. The\nimportant role of the employment expert in effectively\nsupporting people on the job is examined in depth. The\nDiscovery process is introduced as a tool to assist\npeople and their supporters to identify what the person\ncould contribute to the workplace and what is\nnecessary for them to be successful. Important\nconsiderations about planning and working with\npotential employers to customize employment form the\nbasis of the final session. Those wishing to help\nsomeone in their lives attain a good job will have an\nopportunity to think more deeply about the steps\ninvolved and learn from the experience of others.\nMilton Tyree lives in Louisville\, Kentucky and has 40\nyears’ experience in the design\, development and\nprovision of supports and services centered on people\nwith disabilities having access to valued aspects of\neveryday life. A particular area of interest has been the\nongoing struggle around people with disabilities having\ngood employment. Milt’s efforts have been strongly\ninfluenced by the work of the late Dr. Marc Gold\, and he\nis an associate with Marc Gold & Associates (MG&A).\nAdditionally\, the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s Social\nRole Valorization (SRV) theory has been foundational in\nMilt’s understanding of the importance of good\nemployment for people with disabilities\, the reasons\nthis can be difficult\, and considerations for addressing\nthe challenges.

SRV provides a high-order framework for understanding the society in which we live\, and the place people with disabilities tend to hold within in. As well\, SRV thinking is accompanied by very practical implementation strategies to help people with disabilities have access to the good things of life. \nPlease join us as we introduce participants to the basics of Social Role Valorization. This overview event will present the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the implications of those life experiences and are committed to the work of making life better are encouraged to attend. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes multi-media presentation\, small and large group reflection and discussion\, and resource materials. Participants should be prepared for significant presentations as well.

DESCRIPTION:Human beings have vastly more growth potential than is realized by most people\, and this is especially true for people with disabilities. We’re all hard-wired to contribute – seeing purpose in our efforts and doing things for others. All too often people with disabilities are denied the powerful and innate joy of contributing to others\, finding themselves continually on the receiving end of assistance. In authentically supporting people to a more meaningful life\, we have an obligation to help people develop relevant skills and abilities that will serve as a pathway to valued social roles and access to the good things of life. Knowing what to do and having ways to contribute is what makes valued social roles authentic. This three part series will focus on why developing competencies is so important\, strategies for developing our own teaching competencies\, and an opportunity to put the learning into practice. \nJoin the Keystone Institute as we welcome Milton Tyree to lead us through this learning series. Milton Tyree has 40 years of experience in the design\, development and provision of supports and services centered on people with disabilities having access to valued aspects of everyday life. A particular area of interest has been the ongoing struggle around people with disabilities having good employment. His work for the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute focuses on supported employment leadership development.
