DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse Overview and Objectives:  \n  \nThe Introduction to Social Role Valorization is an intensive workshop which presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society\, what life experiences are likely to befall people once they have become devalued in the eyes of others\, why valued social roles are a powerful response in combatting the negative life experiences\, and ten essential themes which can guide implementers in pursuing valued social roles by\, with\, and for those practitioners desire to serve. \n  \nAn Introduction to Social Role Valorization is the foundational course for communicating the theory of Social Role Valorization. This introduction is a pre-requisite to participating in the practicum workshop: An Introduction to PASSING. \n  \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes pre-recorded as well as live presentations\, small and large group live reflection and discussion\, online forums and resource materials. Participants should be prepared for significant presentations. \nThe objectives of this course are to provide better understanding of the negative life experiences of people who have been devalued and the implications of those life experiences\, as well as to provide a framework which can serve as a foundational guide for those who are committed to the work of making life better for devalued people.

I have found it to be powerful\, effective and often life-changing to bring the theory and framework of SRV to the attention of families. From there we work together to use SRV to understand and analyze the world around us\, to guide planning and implementation of strategies that bring about roles\, relationship and places of belonging and contribution to people’s lives. \nThrough stories and real-life examples\, the session explores bringing the ideas of SRV to families\, and will end with a short look at Ethical Partnering between family and agencies\, exploring the questions: What does a principled\, ethical connection to a principled organization look like\, why does this matter\, and how do agencies provide support without getting in the way?

SUMMARY:An Introductory Explanation of Wolfensberger’s Model Coherency As the Key to Human Service Quality
DESCRIPTION:This two-hour presentation via zoom is designed to provide a synopsis of Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s newly published three-volume book on model coherency\, and to\nstimulate renewed interest in its study and application. Dr. Wolfensberger’s book offers his most advanced insights into model coherency\, with much new material on the\nfundamental importance of assumptions\, the culturally valued analogue\, the\ninterconnection between model coherency and Social Role Valorization\, including PASSING and PASS\, the construct of need\, and the distinction between service content and service process.\nWhile this brief event cannot thoroughly explore these areas\, we hope it will encourage your further study of Dr. Wolfensberger writings about them.\nPresentation topics will include the history of the model coherency construct\, an overview of the four major elements of any human service model\, exploration of the six major “tool subjects” of model coherency\, and the suggested frameworks for service\nevaluation and service design.\nThe presentation will conclude with suggestions of potential ways to more fully bring model coherency into ongoing efforts to teach and implement SRV.

For ourselves it is “we are doing fine with the way things are\, thank you.” Human beings cope with change by finding refuge in habitual living. The fact of the matter is that most of our lives are spent in a routinized fashion going from one thing to the next without giving it much thought\, as if things are always the same. We often seem to live in denial\, and automaticity characterizes our lives. Even complex activities such as driving a car are mostly done in almost unconscious fashion – we don’t really notice a lot of the change that goes on around us – we tend to go with the flow of new technology\, for instance. But then there are the dramatic moments when the past seems to break off at the present\, leading to a very different path to the future. Big sudden change – a catastrophe – the loss of a job\, an earthquake\, or a pandemic make huge demands on coping skills. \nSRV is also about change – directed change. It is about being change agents and about better futures. It is about capitalizing on unrelenting change for the better. \nLet’s put two and two together and see what we come up with in this study session incorporating change theory\, mindset change\, and consciousness-raising.

SUMMARY:Good Employment for People with Disabilities: How to Make it Happen A Four Part Series on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:This is a four-part workshop with each session building\non the previous. Participants must attend all sessions.\nThe workshop explores several topics related to\nemployment for people with intellectual disabilities.\nRecognizing that meaningful work is one of the good\nthings of life\, the workshop begins with an examination\nof historical strategies and ideas about work. The\nimportant role of the employment expert in effectively\nsupporting people on the job is examined in depth. The\nDiscovery process is introduced as a tool to assist\npeople and their supporters to identify what the person\ncould contribute to the workplace and what is\nnecessary for them to be successful. Important\nconsiderations about planning and working with\npotential employers to customize employment form the\nbasis of the final session. Those wishing to help\nsomeone in their lives attain a good job will have an\nopportunity to think more deeply about the steps\ninvolved and learn from the experience of others.\nMilton Tyree lives in Louisville\, Kentucky and has 40\nyears’ experience in the design\, development and\nprovision of supports and services centered on people\nwith disabilities having access to valued aspects of\neveryday life. A particular area of interest has been the\nongoing struggle around people with disabilities having\ngood employment. Milt’s efforts have been strongly\ninfluenced by the work of the late Dr. Marc Gold\, and he\nis an associate with Marc Gold & Associates (MG&A).\nAdditionally\, the late Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger’s Social\nRole Valorization (SRV) theory has been foundational in\nMilt’s understanding of the importance of good\nemployment for people with disabilities\, the reasons\nthis can be difficult\, and considerations for addressing\nthe challenges.

As well\, SRV thinking is accompanied by very practical implementation strategies to help people with disabilities have access to the good things of life. \nPlease join us as we introduce participants to the basics of Social Role Valorization. This overview event will present the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the implications of those life experiences and are committed to the work of making life better are encouraged to attend. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways\, and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development\, and it assists in long-term understanding and focus on being of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes multi-media presentation\, small and large group reflection and discussion\, and resource materials.
