SUMMARY:Introduction to PASSING Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This five-day workshop is for those who are interested in deepening their knowledge about the principles of Social Role Valorization. This workshop involves learning to use the PASSING assessment tool\, which looks at the realities of Social Role Valorization in practice. It emphasizes the impact of services on the lives of the people being served\, and provides an opportunity to craft a vision of a good service and the foundation from which to design relevant and effective support\, service\, advocacy\, and assess service quality. The work of PASSING is done in teams\, visiting a residential and a “day” service\, meeting the people being served\, and conducting interviews with service administrators. The workshop involves extensive personal reflection and analysis\, group conciliation\, and thought-provoking discussion. The week’s work is conducted under the guidance of an experienced team leader. Prior attendance to a full SRV theory course\, either online or in-person\, is required to register for this event. This workshop includes long days and late nights. Participants may check in on Sunday\, October 20\, 2024. Workshop fees are $1600 USD for a single occupancy room\, $1200 USD for a double occupancy room and  $500 USD if commuting. Fees include tuition and most meals. An additional fee of $65 will be charged for the Passing Manual.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to a “fish bowl” experience as we explore common themes in using Social Role Valorization as a framework for access to the good things of life. The Help Desk is open! \nEach session\, a person or group can present an issue\, a problem\, or situation they are facing in their use of SRV. A tailor-made group of consultants will offer ideas\, reflections and possibilities from their own experience. Get access to experienced and savvy SRV implementers who will be able to offer support to you. To make this a learning experience for ALL\, we will use a “fishbowl” approach where any and all ISRVA members can join the consult\, see and hear the discussion\, and offer insights as well. \nFor this first try at a help desk\, we feature queries from the Keystone Human Services SRV Leadership Group\, who are working across a large organization to weave the ideas into everyday practice within their own purview and across the organization. \nThe Help Desk Team will be long-time SRV implementers Karin Bonesteel from Nemasket Group in Massachusetts\, Miriam Kaye from Etana in Alberta\, Canada\, and Ric Brown from Community Ventures in Living. All hold senior leadership roles within their organizations\, and are SRV savvy in incorporating the ideas in both formal and informal ways.

DESCRIPTION:Who this workshop is intended for: PASSING workshops are designed to enabled participants who have previously attended a four-day Social Role Valorization (SRV) workshop to gain a deeper understanding of devaluation and of how the promotion of valued social roles may enable people who are disabled and/or devalued to experience “the good thing of life”. The workshop is directed at anyone who is interested in bringing about change in the lives of devalued people\, including human service workers and managers\, service users\, family members\, students\, advocates\, board members\, and others. (Note: Details regarding attendance at a four-day SRV workshop will be requested upon registration.)\nWorkshop format: There are plenary sessions at the beginning and end of the workshop – at the beginning to provide introductory remarks and an overview of the PASSING process\, and at the very end\, to share and reflect upon what we have all learned. In between\, participants are organized into teams of about six people plus a Team Leader (who has had previous PASSING experience). The teams visit two different human service programs (e.g.\, a group residence\, school program\, adult day support program\, etc.). Each study visit includes a lengthy interview with the program managers\, spending time with the service users\, and observing the program. Following each visit\, the team uses the PASSING manual to analyze how the program contributes (or impedes) the development of valued social roles.\nThe first plenary session begins on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. Teamwork begins Monday at 8:00 a.m. The final plenary session concludes on Friday at approximately 1:30 pm.\nImportant note: PASSING workshops require an intense commitment of time and energy. Participants should arrive well rested and plan to forego all outside involvement during the workshop. Participants are expected to review the PASSING Manual prior to the workshop. Participants must be fully present and participate throughout the entire workshop\, including all evening sessions. It should be noted that while past PASSING participants report that these are among the most demanding workshops they have attended\, they rarely express dissatisfaction and\, in fact\, appreciate the workshop’s rigor and high level of engagement.

DESCRIPTION:This intensive workshop presents the idea of assisting people with disabilities and other devalued conditions to have positive social roles\, which serves as a productive and helpful response to wounding life experiences. People wishing to understand the life experiences of people they support and the implications of those life experiences\, and those who are committed to working toward making life better for others are encouraged to attend. \nThis foundational material is essential to those wishing to serve others in meaningful ways and who are impassioned to make a difference in the lives of others. Many participants find the learning within this event to be the most helpful\, inspiring\, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development. It assists in long-term understanding and focus of service to others in ways that matter. \nThe workshop includes multi-media presentation\, small and large group reflection and discussion\, and resource materials.
