JOE
OSBURN Joe has worked with families and children since entering human service in 1964. Particularly since 1974, his work has focused primarily on the use and dissemination of Social Role Valorization Theory as a major safeguard in the lives of handicapped, poor, elderly, and other socially vulnerable people. His human service experience also includesextensive consultation work with family support, child welfare, residential, educational, and other types of services in the fields of mental retardation, mental health, and aging. Consultant activities typically involve conducting training events, service planning (with individuals, families, agencies and service systems), and intensive evaluations of service quality, such as by means of PASS & PASSING. In carrying out this work, Joe has visited, observed and assessed hundreds of services of virtually all types and fields and have traveled widely throughout the United States, Canada & on occasion, in Great Britain and Australia. He has taught both graduate & undergraduate level courses and has been guest lecturer on frequent occasions at many different colleges and universities and also has been a presenter at many conferences, meetings and similar events, including the May, 1994 Ottawa "International Conference on Normalization/Social Role Valorization." He maintains informal personal contact with socially vulnerable people and their family members, and with several individuals and small communal organizations practicing hospitality, life sharing and other forms of solidarity with the poor. He has a long-standing affiliation with Wolf Wolfensberger, PhD., the formulator of SRV, and is a member of the North American SRV Council.
